How To Become a Fashion Designer (Part 1)

The first important decision you'll have to make in your career is your GCSE options. Usually you are allowed to choose 3 options subjects, but it does vary.
The subjects that are best to study at GCSE to become a fashion designer are:

  • Textiles
In textiles you will be exploring design opportunities and materials. You'll design & make textile products that are unique to you and helps you explore & develop your creative ideas and imagination.
You'll create a garment & have an opportunity to model your garment in a fashion show, as well as an opportunity to produce a number of creative pieces working individually or part of a team using CADCAM to produce embroidered pieces.

  • Art & Design
In GCSE art, you develop your drawing skills, study other artists, produce written annotation and practical skills. You study various movements in art as well as individual artists. This culminates in the production of a personal portfolio.
Students learn to work independently through sustained investigation & commitment. Homework counts heavily towards your GCSE grade. The final part of the course consists of a six week preperation period to prepare for a 10 hour exam, which is held over 2 days.

This helps you with drawing your designs & inspires you.

  • French
Listening, Reading, Speaking & Writing in the following subjects:
  • Media & Culture
  • Sport & Leisure
  • Travel & Tourism
  • Business, Work & Employment
  • Centre-devised option
Top universities often favour applicants who have studied a language at GCSE & it's always handy for those fashion shows in Paris!
But remember, when you choose your options, it's better to choose a subject you'll be good at & enjoy, not just one colleges and universities favour.
